I have used every guide and made every sound tweak imaginable to my VMX files to try to resolve this with no luck. This problem has continued after upgrading to Workstation 6.5.1. This occurs on every HOST machine I have tried using it on: two different desktop hosts (one with an SB Live card, the other with onboard SoundMax), and on a laptop (Intel chipset with integrated SoundMax audio). This problem occurs whether I use an existing virtual machine with Workstation 6.0 hardware on Workstation 6.5, upgrade the hardware to version 6.5, or create a new virtual machines with 6.0 or 6.5 hardware under Workstation 6.5. Like ralish, using different channels for high and low DMA doesn't help. 16-bit sound through the high DMA channel works fine. Since upgrading to VMware Workstation 6.5, 8-bit, low DMA sound through the SB16 device is loud and heavily distorted. This problem started for me when I upgraded to VMware Workstation 6.5. This problem occurs in DOS/Windows 3.1 guests with SB16 sound devices using the latest Creative Labs drivers (haven't tried older drivers). Glad to know I'm not the only one, as maybe this will be fixed. I am experiencing the exact same problem. PS: I know this is in ancient land, but these VM's do have their uses, both for entertainment and work! Sound in 9x & NT VM's is flawless, but it also uses the es1371 sound-card and consequently different drivers. Also, the post states that there were sound problems across all VM's but my problem ONLY affects MS-DOS VM's. I say this because the X-Fi is not a recent addition, and these VM's have worked flawlessly under this card in the past. I stumbled across this thread: but do not believe it to be my problem, although I have the exact same hardware and symptoms: an X-Fi sound card, 8GB RAM, distorted sound. I'm hoping someone here might be able to offer some ideas to remedy this problem? Are there any others users out there with an MS-DOS VM using an SB16 card that are experiencing issues? The host software has changed as a complete system reinstall was carried out recently, but the OS remains the same, Vista 圆4 w/ SP1. I suspect this is related to the upgrade to VMware Workstation 6.5, as the host hardware has not changed except for an upgrade from 4GB to 8GB. When I now run these VM's, the sound is badly distorted/scratchy, however, it has worked perfectly in the past. The VM's have versions of Windows spanning from 1.01 to 3.11, but it's only the VM's running Windows 3.11, WFW 3.10 and WFW 3.11 that are relevant as only these VM's have a emulated SB16 sound card, running the latest drivers from Creative. I have several MS-DOS VM's running various versions of Windows all MS-DOS VM's are running MS-DOS 6.22, the last stand-alone version of the OS.
